The Mooroolbark Laneway Rejuvenation Project is an initiative by the Mooroolbark Traders & Community Group funded by a “Living Local Suburban Grant” and “Tideways Owners Corporation”. The group set out to transform a once-overlooked corridor into a vibrant, functional destination for locals and visitors alike. At the heart of this transformation is a collection of hardy street furniture from Draffin Street Furniture, including select pieces from the Wandin Suite and the Hamilton Planter Range.

The project aimed to create a safer, more welcoming, and visually appealing laneway environment, breathing new life into a tired laneway to achieve a more functional space. The space was given a facelift using a bright blue preparation on the concrete walkway. And different blues were also used across the rest of the project.

This was part of a broader effort enhancing the town centre, as Mooroolbark Station was included in the Level Crossing Removal Project and this build had just been completed. This project elevated the rail and station above the town and in the process, transforming the town into a more efficient and usable hub, while creating larger open community spaces.

Mooroolbark Traders & Community Group also oversee the Mooroolbark Street Art Project, an initiative to increase awareness of Mooroolbark’s heritage, and provide opportunities for community connection. The project commissions murals to adorn the walls of the town, “aiming to instil a sense of pride and identity among residents, transforming the township into a vibrant canvas that reflects its diverse culture and rich history”

Combining all of these projects together has overhauled the streets of Mooroolbark, a much-needed upgrade injecting a fresh new look throughout the town.

Hamilton Round Planters

Hamilton Planters are the ultimate in “set and forget” for commercial planters, made in a large collection of shapes, sizes, and materials. Round Planters are the latest variation of this collection, and the project called for two different heights at 500mm diameter.

All Hamilton round planters come standard with WaterUps Water Wicking Cells complete with fill tubes for easy refilling, overflow tubes to prevent overfilling the planter, plus mounting systems for simple and hidden installation into concrete surfaces.

To install on-site, simply pick your position, locate and fix the ground brackets, and bolt the planter onto the ground brackets. Then fill the planter with your chosen growing medium over the WaterUps Cells, and plant your chosen plant ensuring to water it in.

Wandin Modular Seats and Benches

Public Seating in Mooroolbark

With so many standard shapes and sizes available, Wandin Modular Seating provides infinite seating configurations. In this instance, a mix of benches and seats to form a straight shape with a gentle curved bench enabling varied usage.

This configuration features Enviroslat Composite Battens in Walnut colour. Made of recycled post-industrial plastics and rice husks, this material is split and rot proof, guaranteeing long life performance in the harshest environments.

Like the planters for this project, the frames are manufactured in mild steel. The frames are then hot dip galvanised for corrosion protection long into the future and finally powdercoated.

Notably, this seat configuration has been in-ground mounted using Wandin’s in-ground post mounted option. This mounting option is usually selected when seats will be mounted away from concrete surfaces, but in this case offers a seamless connection to the concrete surface and does make it easier to sweep or pressure wash the concrete under the seat.

Mix n’ Match

Small Round Bin with Cover in Mooroolbark VictoriaDraffin Street Furniture’s Round Bin was also specified into this project is several locations. This legendary bin style has been in production at Draffin for over 35 years, and comes with a lockable flip top spun cover, housing a heavy-duty 55lt galvanised steel liner. These bins were specified to match the existing Round Bins already placed everywhere across this shopping centre and were obviously the deciding factor for the colour scheme used in the project.

These bins fit right in, as the combination of the bright powdercoat colour theme with the selection of standard furniture products used across this project converted unrelated products into a cohesive suite.
