Wyndham City Council’s new Truganina Community Centre was officially opened mid 2024, situated next to Elements Shopping Centre, part of Elements Estate in Truganina.

After extensive community engagement it was determined that the community centre needed to include a variety of services while remaining carbon neutral in operation that targeted a 5-star Green Star Rating.

As the community center was located next to the shopping centre, the two formed a community hub which naturally needed children’s services including three kindergarten rooms as well as maternal child health and allied health services. The venue also includes a library lounge with technology and study spaces, multipurpose community and meeting rooms, a community kitchen, staff offices, accessible amenities, outdoor areas, and on-site parking.

Wandin Modular Furniture

Outlines Landscape Architects specified Draffin Street Furniture’s Wandin Modular Furniture for placement across the grounds. The Wandin Furniture Suite offers an vast array of straight and curved street furniture products, designed to be used in a modular sense, to create custom seating profiles. From smaller shapes through to long sweeping forms, Wandin Modular Furniture is capable of providing a bespoke aspect without the need to design new furniture to fit the space.

Long Seating Configurations

Many outdoor spaces at Truganina Community Center called for outdoor seating, mostly focussed around entrances and high traffic areas. Wandin furniture, particularly when used on longer modular configurations, is ideal for use around perimeters and garden edges and provides a greater number of seating spaces due to there being no gaps between seats.

Wandin Modular Furniture profiles essentially come in four main (major) module seat shapes consisting of three curved radius modules, and one straight module. There are then a series of smaller minor modules that assist with tighter corners and junctions.

All Wandin Furniture for the project was specified with composite Enviroslat battens, galvanised mild steel frames, and Wandin Concrete Plinths for the mounting solution. The combination of materials makes for highly dependable furniture that would require little to no maintenance at this location.

The modular concrete plinths used to mount the furniture were also used to retain the garden beds at two locations of the building’s grounds. Here, you can see blended concrete form work that meets the height of the seating on both ends, forming one continuous curved retaining wall.

You can see in this image how benches and seats with back can be used side by side to create a continuous snaking profile, with armrests that virtually create a separate seating space while still part of the same configuration.

To extend Wandin’s flexibility, curved seats with back can be manufactured in concave or convex format.

Custom “Cubby Benches”

A single deviation from the standard Wandin Modular offering; the Childrens Centre was specified with galvanised mild steel boxes to mount the Wandin battened frames. The steel boxes were open on one side, with the purpose of under bench storage to quickly stow equipment and bags when they weren’t needed.

This smart storage solution keeps toys and tripping hazards out of sight, not to mention maintaining a neat and clean appearance in an otherwise wild environment.

Mounting Options

While this project features modular trapezoidal concrete plinths that fit underneath each Wandin modular configuration, there are six other mounting options from simple inground or bolt down steel posts through to more complex leg shapes. This allows greater flexibility in application, so Wandin furniture can be used in urban through to bushland environments.

Additionally, the Full Concrete Bench (found in the mounting options above) applies to all module shapes and sizes, extending the Wandin Modular range even further for ultimate alternate bench styling.
