Year 10 Design Students at Matthew Flinders Anglican College were tasked to with a design brief to upgrade an underused tuckshop-adjacent space into a vibrant, shaded social hub that enhances wellbeing, connection, and outdoor learning. Supported by the College’s Parents & Friends Association, it was a project that blends real‑world learning with meaningful campus improvement.
Their proposals informed the final design and was officially opened in November 2025 by the College Principal and P&F representatives.
The space was named “The Cove”.
Featured Furniture
The final layout in the courtyard featured a mix of Draffin’s furniture designs, but all using a defined palette of colours and materials. This blended each design into a cohesive suite unique to this space. The palette consisted of:
- Satin Powdercoat in Woodland Grey
- Timber-Look Aluminium Battens in Ironbark
- 304 Grade Stainless Steel – Brushed or Polished Finish
Hobart Table Settings
Hobart Table Settings are a dependable design, made primarily for remote regional installation where maintenance may be minimal. Fully welded frames with full length inset battens. Hobart furniture can be made in Draffin’s full array of park furniture material, so they can be tailored to all manner of applications and climates.
Hamilton Planters & Benches
Hamilton Planters would be the most versatile commercial planter in Australia. Standard features include easy surface mounting hideaway feet and brackets, built-in self-watering wicking systems, many shapes including square, rectangle, round, and tapered, in many sizes. And not to forget benches that can be included at seat, table and bar heights.
The Hamilton Suite also includes benches that sit atop planter-like bodies to match in with the Hamilton Planter aesthetic. Like the planters, the benches can be made in a variety of lengths and widths.Hepburn Tables
Hepburn Round Tables feature battens inset into an external ring welded to a reinforced frame and have a pedestal style central leg that provides easy access underneath the table for cleaning and sweeping. Available in a few sizes and three heights including seat, table, and bar for maximum application. Hepburn furniture can be specified in all Draffin standard furniture materials for battens and frames. While the tables are consistently specified for projects, the Hepburn stool (not featured in this project) has proven very popular and is also available in both standard seat and bar heights.
900 Series Bin Surrounds
And rounding out the collection in this project is the 900 Series bin surround. The design is based closely on the steel panelled 800 series from Draffin, utilising the same cover range, but simply changing out the body construction and materials. Inset battens are placed into fully welded frames and overall provide a more softened bin surround look that lends well to bushland settings or spaces that require a more natural looking material palette.
