The 900 series bin surround is modelled directly from the classic 800 series design.
This is testament to Draffin’s capabilities to offer custom options to style bin surrounds the way you want. In this case, they were born from a customer’s desire to clad their bin enclosures in timber battens in an effort to soften their appearance in the space they were being placed. Batten clad bins have the ability to blend into bushland settings, particularly when using timber. The result looked great, and the design instantly became a standard offering.
As they were modelled directly from 800 series bin surrounds, the 900 series version used the same covers and therefore was every bit as versatile as its counterpart.
900 series bin surrounds were originally only offered with timber battens, however as time went on, new materials were added to the standard options and are now available with maintenance free aluminium and HDPE plastic options in a large array of colours, styles, and finishes.
Take a look at these featured 900 series bin surrounds:
This is the classic 900 series format with a sloped cover. Round recycle and frogmouth openings as standard. This one features matching powdercoated frames and covers, maintenance free Enviroslat composite battens and a bolt on sign panel that facilitates application of all-weather decals.
This combination dual bay duo is another classic. Brushed stainless steel frames, mirror polished stainless steel covers, and solid spotted gum timber battens. This set is placed indoors in a shopping centre, so for maximum access, a flat cover with a top opening for regular rubbish, and a low pyramid cover for regular recycling waste that limits the type of waste the bin can accept to bottles, cans and containers.
Ideal for bushland applications where wildlife may try to access bins as a food source. The spring weighted chute can be easily opened using the large bar handle, and when released will softly return to close access to the wheelie bin, preventing animals from easy access inside. These bins also feature clear vertical door signage, a popular signage option on many bin surround styles across Draffin’s wheelie bin surround range.
Draffin’s HDPE plastic materials are sourced locally, and are manufactured using recycled post-industrial plastic waste. While Recycled Plastic Battens are an option, you can also opt for full sized recycled HDPE panels. They can be specified in up to ten colours and there are several standard panel patterns to choose from or they can be left plain.
Recycled HDPE is an extremely rugged material, and literally maintenance free.
Curved covers are an alternate single opening style to sloped covers. This one features brushed stainless steel cover and frame, with Enviroslat battened panels. Note the matching materials used on both bin surround and seat. Using matching materials across all public furniture in that same space creates a cohesive aesthetic, boosting street appeal.
900 series bin surrounds come in 120lt and 240lt sizes, but with small alterations they can cater for other wheelie bin sizes. Because of their construction 900 series bin surrounds are only available in a single bay format but can be placed close together to form multi-bay configurations. Multi-waste streams are becoming more and more common in public places, and the 900 series bin surround provides a multitude of options to cater for all your waste types.
02.
Covers are important, and need to be considered carefully, based on where and how you intend to use the bin surround. Will the bin be placed outdoors, or under cover? Will the bin need multiple access openings or will it be installed against a wall where access is likely to only be required from the front? From there, there is several options available to suit each application.
For Sloped, Curved and High Pyramid Covers, choose frogmouth or recycling openings. Public recycling waste bins usually provide smaller openings to limit the size and type of waste that can be placed inside.
03.
You can choose what materials the bin surround will be made of, and again consideration needs to be given to the location of the bin surround.
316 grade stainless steel
If corrosion is apparent in the location due to environmental conditions like coastal settings where salt blows in from the ocean, then perhaps a corrosion resistive material should be considered. Stainless steel is best in these conditions. In fact 316 grade stainless steel is considered “marine grade” and will survive coastal installation almost indefinitely.
304 grade stainless steel
But perhaps you choose to use stainless steel simply for aesthetic reasons. Then 304 grade stainless steel may be more suited in this circumstance. 304 grade stainless steel is ideal for less demanding environments and indoor applications.
To learn more about what stainless steel is right for your application, Draffin Street Furniture offers a Stainless Steel Guide. Our sales staff are also happy to answer any questions you may have.
Powdercoated finishes
In most cases, zinc plated mild steel is used when powdercoated finishes are required. There are many powdercoat colours and finishes available, chosen when the bin surround needs to stand out in the crowd, make it easily identifiable, or perhaps to match in with the styling of the location. Powdercoat finishes are heavy duty, scratch resistant and can be specified with an anti-graffiti coating, to make removing graffiti easier. Covers can be colour coded to suit the waste type and you can add colour face plates or decals to further make waste types obvious to the user.
You can choose what materials to use on both the covers and the frames, with the exception of flat covers that use mirror polished 316 grade stainless steel, proven highly scratch resistant for the application, and easy to clean.

It is the panels that set the 900 series apart from other bin surrounds.
Sustainably sourced Spotted Gum Timber Battens are a popular choice and provide a natural appeal that blends well into bushland settings.
Alternatively, maintenance free “Timber-Look” Aluminium Battens can be specified and are available in three varieties. A randomised timber grain image is baked into a hardy powdercoated finish for ultimate reliability while still providing that natural appeal of timber.
The same aluminium battens can be simply powdercoated in almost any colour for a more modern and sleeker look.
HDPE recycled plastic can be specified in both batten and full panel form. The battens retain the same 65mmx 19mm profile as all other batten options, or full size panels with or without routed patterns are available also.
A handy batten guide explains the different batten options available. The guide also lists pros and cons of each material, which can help determine the best material choice in your location.
05.
Waste separation starts at the bin. Make it easy to identify the type of waste the bin accepts by adding signage. A standard decal guide is available for you to choose appropriate signage for your bin surrounds. It lists decals and other signage options available including sign plates, laser cut signage and custom options.
06.
As standard, all 900 series bin surrounds come with an 8mm tri-key slam lock. Accessed only by authorised people with the special 8mm tri-key. This stops public access to the wheelie bin while the lock allows the lock tab to spring back into the locking position when closed.
