The City of Yarra completed Gwynne Street “Pocket Plaza” in the back streets of Cremorne, improving and expanding Stephenson St Reserve. A mini recreational hub for residents and pedestrians, and a kerb outstand designed with an alternate purpose of creating a safer crossing point at Gwynne St for Stephenson St.
The project adds an inviting space to rest and socialise in an area that was in great need of revitalising. New native trees and shrubs plus grassed areas were included in the project as well, while maximising the limited space for both plants and pedestrians.

Bead Blasted Stainless Steel
The furniture uses 316 grade stainless steel for frames, tables and stools, while spotted gum battens are utilised for all seats.
Yarra City Council have opted to use a bead blasted finish on all the stainless steel furniture components for Gwynne Street Pocket Plaza. The bead blasted texture spreads the reflected light evenly and gives an alternate lux look to brush finished stainless steel. Bead blasted stainless steel retains its anti-corrosion properties and has proven just as easy to clean as brush finished stainless surfaces.

Custom Furniture
The design brief came from Yarra City Council and our engineers worked closely with them ensuring all details were covered to get them ready for production. Tight public spaces such as this project demand customised furniture which enables larger furniture to integrate into the provided spaces and maximise the usable space.
Sweeping Seat with Back
The main featured furniture comprises of a long sweeping seat with back that follows the contour of the road and finally curves inward to create a space for a eucalypt tree behind it. The seat is also dotted with café style stainless steel round tables with assorted café stool seating arrangements designed to cater for separate social groups to use at the same time.
Table Settings
Table settings with all stainless steel tables and spotted gum topped seats and benches are used in this space. Carefully selected materials throughout the space make this site look inviting and cozy. The combination of native plants, weathered and stainless steels, and stonework transform and promote this area into a more sociable and welcoming place to be, and ensure a lasting installation.
Seat with Back and Armrests
A matching Seat with Back and Armrests was designed and included in the project.
This seat is a great example of what can be achieved through customisation. Yarra City Council had a direct vision of the type of furniture to be used in this project. Once the initial concept had been modelled, smaller tweaks were needed to fine tune the design to meet Yarra City Council’s brief.
Our engineers ensured the design met Yarra City Council’s aesthetic requirements, checked to ensure the furniture would meet comfort requirements for the majority of users, and made sure all furniture was engineered to a heavy-duty standard to last a lifetime outdoors, safely.
Once the designs were approved the furniture was committed to production.
