They include a pull-down handle that opens the bin cover revealing a chute for which the rubbish is guided down directly to the internal wheelie bin. The chute soft returns using a spring and damper mechanism, and closes the opening to both hide away the rubbish and prevent access to the bin by animals.

The cover was originally developed for Australian Zoos, with Healesville Sanctuary trialling a new three bin solution as part of Zoos Victoria’s new “Zero Waste Policy”. Their commitment to carbon reduction and environmental sustainability has earned them carbon neutral certification, and the world’s first zoos to achieve this.
The cover was to prevent wildlife from accessing the internal wheelie bins and using the waste as a food source. The bin design somewhat pointed a finger at the main culprit as this design was appropriately named the “Possum Proof Bin”. Once these custom bins were confirmed as an approved solution many other zoos within Australia have also rolled out this proprietary bin utilising the pivot chute cover.
New Standard Cover Option
Draffin Street Furniture’s confidence in this bin surround cover’s reliability came from testing the mechanism on a physical test simulator well over 21000 cycles. Trial and error testing both in-house and on-site allowed Draffin’s engineers to perfect the mechanism and eventually meant the cover could be used as a standard option for both 800 and 900 series bin surrounds.
The covers are available in mild steel with powdercoated finishes, and 304 or 316 grade stainless steel. And for extra reliability the chute and handle are made in 304 and 316 grade stainless steel, that make them easy to regularly clean as well.
