The City of Boroondara recently completed another streetscape upgrade, this time in the suburb of Balwyn. Yerrin Street is located in the heart of the Balwyn shopping precinct. The vision of the Balwyn improvement initiative was to ‘create a safe, functional and pedestrian-friendly environment for locals and visitors’. In consultation with the community, Boroondara developed concept designs for the furniture that Draffin then manufactured into a complete suite.
Wanting to create a space where people can stop and rest or socialise, the freshly landscaped street is filled with new outdoor furniture such as seats, table settings and rubbish bins. The use of natural materials such as timber, incorporated with greenery has softened the appearance of Balwyn’s shopping strip, enhancing the area and adding visual appeal.
Boroondara’s Senior Landscape Architect, Joo Sung explained that for this project they wanted to incorporate both formal and casual style seating. The formal styles, featuring straight and corner seats were placed closer to the main shopping strip on Whitehorse road. Flexible seating options such as picnic settings and platform seats were positioned on the fringe of the residential area.
Limited materials and a modest colour palette throughout ensured continuity.
The Boroondara Furniture Suite
The area features plenty of seating variations to maximise the use of public space. Bespoke seats, picnic settings and platforms line both sides of Yerrin Street. Fabricated from sustainable spotted gum timber battens and encased in 304 stainless steel frames, the combination of aesthetics and durability guarantees this furniture suite will stand the test of time.
