Draffin Street Furniture recently manufactured a custom furniture suite for a town square project in the heart of Rockingham’s central business district.
Bringing People Back to Rockingham’s City Square
Nestled between the local law courts, Rockingham Medical Centre and the City of Rockingham Administration Building, the underutilised City Square was long overdue for a revamp.
Constructed over twenty-five years ago, the square design was dated and proving difficult to maintain. This was mainly due to a collection of large mature trees. It was also not being used by those working or passing through the area, as it no longer met the level of usability required by the local community.
The Furniture Suite
The project’s designers, from Western Australian architecture firm EPCAD, worked with Draffin engineer Brad Thompson to develop a custom Hobart suite. As the area was going to be transformed into a multi-purpose space, the seating options had to be comfortable and inclusive to meet the Council’s brief.
The outdoor furniture pieces used in the City Square project are from our Hobart range. This robust suite has a wide frame – ideal for incorporating laser cut custom patterns like the featured leaf design. The newly landscaped square features both standard and wheelchair accessible table settings, seats and bench seats.
The Hobart suite was designed as a contemporary solution for areas that need heavy duty outdoor furniture. The range is favoured by landscape architects and councils in regional areas, as the durability of the pieces ensures they will be in use for many years to come.
The original design incorporates hard-wearing materials such as Australian hardwood timber and weathering steel. However, for this project, the frames were powder-coated in a dark rust shade. This gave an instant weathering steel effect, minus the runoff. EPCAD chose to add armrests to the seats, to provide extra support and stability for the user.
