Evergreen Civil contracted Draffin Street furniture to fabricate custom modular bench seats for Whitehorse Councils renewal project in Mitcham, Victoria.
The Objective
The key objective of the Station Street project was to revitalise the shopping precinct; improving the appearance, amenity and function for local traders, customers and visitors to the area.
Landscape architecture company Outlines designed the bespoke modular bench seats. Ben Draffin, Draffin’s engineering manager worked with the Outlines team throughout the project, to develop these distinctive yet functional set of seats. The seats feature a unique locking system, arranged in configurations to suit the expanding Station Street precinct.
Placed intermittently along Station Street, Peter Wilson – a senior landscape architect at Outlines explains “the seats are designed to be modular in that they can be rearranged to adapt to future changes in the streetscape, such as on-street trading. They are fixed to the pavement in a way that makes them easy to move without leaving a mark and bolted together in various arrangements without the need to drill additional holes. These arrangements provide basic seating, or more intimate nodes/spaces”.
Constructed from sustainably sourced spotted gum battens, powder coated steel and recycled plastic, the benches are extremely resilient – perfect for high traffic streetscape areas.
The pattern is a nod to the historic Australian Tessellated Tile Factory, a former key employer in the Mitcham area. The tessellated pattern boarders Mitcham’s business and retail sector, guiding pedestrians as they move between the station and Retail Centre.
Draffin designs and manufactures an extensive range of street and park furniture. However; we also enjoy working on custom concepts that help bring a project to life. Working with clients from design to completion, Draffin has the knowledge and experience to handle any project.
