Draffin was appointed by contractors Baron Forge to fabricate bespoke seating for Monash Clayton’s Southern Precinct Landscape project. Part of the Monash Masterplan, the Southern Precinct forms the gateway to the Clayton Campus and joins the Monash Transport Interchange, Alexander Theatre, Learning and Teaching Building and the heritage Menzies Building. The projects aim was to transform the connecting 2.5 hectares, redefining the campus entrance and how students experience it.
Ben Draffin, Draffin’s engineering manager worked with ASPECT Studios throughout the project to develop a suite of contemporary seating.
The Outdoor Furniture Suite
Picnic settings form study areas on the vast timber decking and modular bench seats add visual interest to the sweeping pedestrian paths. Constructed from sustainably sourced Australian hardwood battens and contrasting galvanised steel, the durable seating blends harmoniously with the surroundings.
Dotted throughout the Southern Precinct’s paved areas are modular seats and benches. Arranged to support busy campus life, the seats create gathering areas for relaxing, lunch breaks and meet ups between classes.
The ability to keep devices charged is a priority for many students utilising the outdoor learning area for study. To keep students connected during their time on campus, the picnic settings feature outdoor charging stations. The weatherproof adapter station charges multiple smart devices at one time and features waterproof components able to withstand life outdoors.
