Alpine Shire Council recently completed the Myrtleford leg of the ‘Alpine Better Places’ project. This included the improvement of Myrtle Street’s streetscape and upgraded facilities at Jubilee park. The ASC commissioned Draffin Street Furniture to manufacture their outdoor furniture designs. ASC’s designs included picnic settings, bench seating and bike racks.

The vision for the Myrtleford project was to improve the overall identity of the town. As a result, Myrtleford has transitioned into a lively and accessible town.

Established in 1859, Myrtleford was one of the largest producers of tobacco and hops in the district. The Alpine Shire’s landscape architect team used natural urban materials.  Untreated Australian hardwood timber and locally sourced stone and granitic gravel featured throughout the . These materials integrate seamlessly into the landscape, whilst maintaining Myrtleford’s historic country town charm.

The Furniture

The ASC commissioned Draffin Street Furniture to manufacture a suite of outdoor furniture; including picnic settings, bench seating and bike racks. The brief was to create a suite of outdoor pieces that met the contemporary, angular and dynamic design aesthetic brief. Draffin’s engineering team worked alongside the architectural team to refine the designs into working models.

Myrtleford sits at the base of Mount Buffalo – well known for its icy, snowy conditions in winter. Hence, the materials used in the furniture suite had to have the ability to withstand harsh climates. Solid spotted gum timber battens formed the tops, finished in a clear stain to let the natural characteristics shine. Galvanised mild steel formed the frames, powder coated in a slate grey.

The benches, seats and bike racks placed along Myrtle Street create a more user friendly streetscape. As a result, these little pockets encourage people to stay and use the spaces as they explore the town.

The table settings scattered throughout Jubilee Park enhance the usability of the parklands. They also provide an area for people to relax next to the Happy Valley Creek and enjoy the scenic surroundings.
